The treatment services and activities that are available in Baptist rehab programs are very similar to those in non-faith-based programs, with a few more options available.
Detox
The first step in any addiction treatment plan is to go through a supervised detox. Detoxes are important because they allow a body time to flush out any lingering drugs or alcohol in your system. During this time, patients will be continually monitored by a medical professional.
Patients also have the opportunity to socialize with others who are also going through the detox program.
Some types of detox require opioid replacement medication and, therefore, may not be available in every Baptist rehab program.
Inpatient or Residential Treatment
Once patients have completed the detoxification process, the next step for those who need intense care and assistance is inpatient and residential treatment. These programs have proven to be highly successful in helping people achieve and maintain sobriety.
Inpatient programs are based on a strict, structured schedule that includes various types of therapy, support groups, classes, and extracurricular activities to fill each day.
In Baptist programs, these activities will also include Bible study, prayer time, and fellowship.
Chapel, Prayer, and Worship
In a Baptist substance abuse program, alongside the evidence-based treatments, are the spiritual components and tools used to overcome drug and alcohol addiction.
These tools can include time spent fellowshipping with other Christians, spending time in Bible study, time in prayer, and worship. These tools are very helpful for developing and strengthening a person’s faith and helping build resolve to overcome addiction.
Gender-Based Care
Typically in faith-based treatment programs, especially if they are inpatient or residential treatment programs, there will be gender-specific treatments.
This is important and helpful during the rehab process in order to help people feel that they are safe and can be open and vulnerable. This is especially true in situations where people may be discussing trauma that led to their addiction.
Outpatient Treatment
Once someone has successfully completed detoxification and an inpatient treatment program, the next step is usually finding an outpatient treatment program.
Outpatient programs are designed in a step-down manner, so each level decreases in intensity and supervision.
The three main types of outpatient treatment programs are:
- Partial hospitalization programs
- Intensive outpatient programs
- General outpatient programs
These levels are structured so that by the time a person has reached the general outpatient program level, they are equipped with the tools and resources they need to live a sober life.
Counseling and Therapy
In any addiction treatment program, counseling and therapy are important in order to help maintain sobriety. In Baptist rehab programs, the counselors and therapists are more than likely going to be Christian counselors or advisors.
Support Groups
An important aspect of the Baptist faith is fellowship and being involved in groups. In Baptist rehab programs, an important way to incorporate this is to be involved in support groups. It is also very beneficial in maintaining long-term sobriety.
Faith-based 12-step programs play important roles in Baptist rehab, including Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. These meetings are held almost constantly in many places around the nation.
