During your Jain rehab program, you’ll receive a combination of evidence-based treatment methods and faith-based treatment approaches as part of a comprehensive recovery plan.
Keep reading to learn about some of the most common treatment services in Jain addiction treatment.
Inpatient or Residential Treatment
Known for providing the highest level of care, inpatient treatment programs require individuals to live in a treatment facility for the duration of their rehab program.
Inpatient treatment is a very structured and regimented type of treatment, usually with a set daily schedule. You’ll receive a combination of several treatment services based on your needs.
In Jain inpatient programs, Jain practices like meditation and prayer are incorporated into treatment schedules.
Medical Detox
Offered at the start of both inpatient and outpatient treatment programs, medical detoxification is another common treatment service in Jain rehab.
Medical detox is a very important recovery service as it helps the body flush out any remaining addictive substances, essentially providing a clean slate for treatment.
Some people try to detox from addictive substances on their own, but it is vital to do so with the help of a medical professional as it can be incredibly dangerous in home settings.
During a detox, your care providers will help make sure you are detoxing safely by administering any necessary medications, helping you manage withdrawal symptoms and cravings, and monitoring your vitals. You may find prayer to be particularly beneficial at this time.
Outpatient Treatment
Outpatient rehab is the other main category of addiction treatment next to inpatient treatment. It is often considered a step down from inpatient treatment, but is still very effective.
Unlike inpatient treatment, outpatient treatment allows participants to continue living at home. Rather than living in a treatment facility, they are expected to travel to one several days a week for rehab.
Outpatient treatment can be a great alternative for people who cannot live outside of their home for the amount of time an inpatient program requires.
There are also variations of outpatient treatment such as partial hospitalizations programs (PHPs) and intensive outpatient programs (IOPs), both of which offer a level of care somewhere in between inpatient and standard outpatient treatment.
MAT
Medication-assisted treatment is an evidence-based treatment option that uses medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat addiction.
It may sound like an odd concept, but the medication works to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms as well as encourage a long-lasting recovery.
MAT is traditionally used in opioid addiction, but can be used in other substance addictions. It’s often a long-term treatment service that requires regular follow-ups with your care provider.
Dual Diagnosis
Many people who have a substance addiction also have mental health disorders like anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, or depression. These are called co-occurring disorders and can exacerbate or even cause addiction.
Dual diagnosis treatment is a special treatment approach designed to address the physical and mental sides of addiction simultaneously.
Typically services like counseling and behavioral therapy are used as the foundation for treatment in conjunction with other treatment approaches.
Counseling and Behavioral Therapy
Jain rehab centers also incorporate treatment services such as counseling and behavioral therapies. These are great options for all individuals, but particularly those who have mental health issues.
Counseling is a treatment approach you may find in one-on-one or group settings, oftentimes people attend both types of counseling. This service is an opportunity to voice your thoughts, worries, and goals in regards to addiction recovery.
Behavioral therapy, on the other hand, is a type of talk therapy. Simply put, this type of therapy focuses on behavioral patterns and thought patterns that may be worsening your addiction.
Behavioral therapy approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) work to adjust these patterns and teach you new coping techniques.
Meditation, Prayer, and Other Jain Practices
The faith-based practices you will likely see incorporated at a Jain treatment center include meditation, prayer, and practices/amenities that uphold Jain beliefs.
For instance, you may have a block of time worked into your schedule that you can use for individual meditation and prayer at your discretion. You may also find that group prayer and meditation are included during different treatment services and activities.
Because non-violence and harm reduction are such vital pieces of Jainism, Jain treatment centers also uphold these beliefs.
Jains are vegetarians and also do not eat root vegetables. That being said, the food in these programs will often be adjusted to these beliefs. At non-specific religious rehabs, these changes can often be requested.
Likewise, Jains also practice fasting during certain time periods. This is something that religious rehabs will respect. Many Jains will take necessary medications during times of fasting if it is important to their health.
Support Groups
Support groups are offered in inpatient and outpatient treatment settings. Support groups are groups of people who have all experienced substance addiction who come together to speak about their journeys and experiences.
Twelve-step meetings are a common example of this, though they incorporate religion a bit more. Original 12-step meetings were based around Christianity and God, but modern-day 12-step meetings can be adjusted to other belief systems like Jainism.
