Drug and alcohol addiction treatment is an important part of healthcare that millions of people need, but many don’t receive treatment due to the cost. The good news is that insurance benefits often cover a large part of the cost for rehab, and this includes TRICARE.
If you have TRICARE health insurance, learning how it applies to drug and alcohol treatment can help you better understand your benefits and what you may have to pay out of pocket for rehab.
Serving about 9.6 million individuals nationwide, TRICARE is a widely used health insurance provider for active-duty service members, military members, military veterans and their family members. TRICARE isn’t a private insurance company like other providers. It’s a government-run program that provides benefits for medical care, behavioral health and prescription medications.
TRICARE insurance covers drug and alcohol rehab, but there are some limitations. Benefits through TRICARE cover medically and psychologically necessary services related to substance abuse treatment.

If you’re receiving MAT through a clinical office, rather than an inpatient setting, the clinic must meet all requirements of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and any state and local agencies to qualify for coverage.
Inpatient treatment offers 24/7 medical support and requires the individual to live in a designated facility. TRICARE covers residential treatment but requires pre-authorization.

Counseling and behavioral therapy are vital parts of many addiction treatment programs. Individual counseling, group counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) can be part of a care plan to treat substance use disorder.
TRICARE covers counseling and psychotherapy in inpatient and outpatient settings. Assessments for substance use disorder and mental health concerns are also covered if they’re used to develop a treatment plan.
After completing an addiction treatment program, some people choose to continue certain services as they transition back to their day-to-day lives. This is known as continuing care or aftercare and can include counseling, support groups and sober living facilities.
Whether TRICARE covers continuing care depends on the type. Medically necessary outpatient treatment will be covered, but sober living may not be because it’s considered supportive housing instead of evidence-based treatment.

You can find rehab centers near you that accept TRICARE through its “Find a Doctor” tool. The tool will walk you through specific questions about the type of care you need and then provide information on which providers you can see for that care.
You can also call TRICARE if you prefer to talk to someone about provider options. Many rehab facilities also provide a list of accepted insurance providers on their websites, and you can call the facility directly to verify.
